The motherboard is often considered to be the most important part of the computer next to the power supply simply because it is the motherboard that will ultimately determine whether or not the computer itself actually works. When you are choosing a new motherboard for your computer there are a number of different things that you will need to take into consideration. The following are some of those items, and once you read them, you will gain a better understanding of how to not only choose the right motherboard, but also make the best use of it.
Interface: Naturally you will want to make sure that your motherboard can support the latest and greatest interfaces, and this means that you will need to ensure it supports PCIe which is to say PCI Express. The progression of interfaces over the years takes this form: ISA, PCI, AGP, PCI-Express. Something to note is that standard PCI is still in use as it is needed for networking cards as well as sound cards.
Processor: Make sure that the motherboard you buy is able to support the processor you want. Take note that the majority of motherboards on the market today support dual core processors, though there are some boards that support upgrading to a quad core processor when the proper bios updates are applied. This is something that you will need to ask the manufacturer before you actually make your purchase.
Form Factor: There are a number of different form factors, the most common being ATX. The difference between AT and ATX is simply the power option. With an ATX form factor you will not need to wait for the computer’s permission to shut down. You can simply give the shutdown command, leave the room, and expect the computer to be powered down when you return.
There are a number of different motherboard manufacturers out there, one of which is Asus. This company makes uses of the P45 Socket 775 motherboard which features an Intel 775 Processor slot as well as support for DDR2 memory. There are typically three PCIe slots and two PCIe X16 slots. Modern interfaces such as these are quite important, and also important is the ever-useful USB slot.
USB slots were rare at one point but a typical 775 motherboard will come with ten to twelve slots for your keyboard, mouse, joystick, or any number of other peripherals. It is difficult to tell just what you will need on a given day, and with that being the case, it is always better to have more than you need than to go with a cheaper model.
These are just a few facts that you will need to be privy to when you are purchasing a motherboard of any type. The right board can ultimately provide you with a high level of enjoyment for any years. The wrong board however can cause serious problems, and this is something you will want to avoid at any cost.
